Locos Player Profile: Marcel Shipp

Several weeks ago the Las Vegas Locos announced their list of protected players that were excluded from the expansion draft of the United Football League. The only running back on the list was 31 year old Marcel Shipp.

Although Shipp split time with DeDe Dorsey, who has since left the Locos for a contract with the NFL’s Detroit Lions, he was still the UFL’s fourth-leading rusher with 81 carries for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns. The fact that he is the only running back by the Locos is a strong indicator of his value to the team.

Shipp isn’t used to being in such high demand by a professional football team. After a stellar collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts, all 32 NFL teams passed on Shipp in all 7 rounds of the draft. Although he was left off the draft board, he wasn’t locked out of the NFL. Following the draft, Shipp signed a contract with the Arizona Cardinals as an Undrafted Free Agent.

Fortunate as the contract was for Shipp, it was just as fortunate for the Cardinals. Although they saw little return from Shipp his rookie year, he busted onto the scene the following year with 834 yards on 188 carries and 6 touchdowns, in addition to 413 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns through the air. Although this year alone made him a worthy investment for the Cardinals, his production began to decline and was eventually out of the league by 2008.

Shipp finished his NFL career with 11 touchdowns, 2,197 rushing yards, and 605 carries, in addition 113 receptions for 937 yards and 3 receiving touchdowns over the course of 6 seasons.

Shipp’s exit from the NFL wasn’t too unexpected as the age of 30 has become the age-du-choix for running backs to be deemed too old by modern NFL wisdom. However, his entrance into the UFL was unexpected; or at least the way in which he entered the UFL was unexpected.

The Locos did not think they were getting a running back when they originally approached Shipp on joining their organization for the premiere season of the UFL. Coach Jim Fassel asked Shipp if he would consider joining as a running backs coach. It was Shipp who indicated that he still had interest in playing, in spite of being north of age 30. Coach Fassel gave him a work out and was impressed. “Heck, this guy can still play. He’s got some years left,” said Fassel.

At that point it was a no-brainer to sign Shipp to the Locos’ roster. As Fassel said himself, “He’s a good blocker, a good powerful inside-type runner, a good receiver and a guy that’s got experience on the professional level.”

His experience shined through. In addition to on-field production, he became a locker-room leader. According to Fassel, other running backs on the team took the opportunity to “learn from him little tricks and see how concentrated and focused he is,” which is “the key — if you want to be good.”

The 2010 off season continues with Shipp currently as the only running back on the roster; however, with the Locos looking forward to the last two of their three scheduled tryouts, it is clear that he won’t be alone for long. Which is great for the Locos. The quicker the franchise can get its future backs into the same locker room as their current player-coach, the bigger the head start the Locos backfield will have against opposing defenses.

2 More Chances to Join the Las Vegas Locos

The Las Vegas Locos are giving athletes the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and earn a roster spot this fall with the United Football League’s defending champions. The Locos will have two tryouts in May to give the organization a look at some of the many tremendous college and professional players that have been previously overlooked.

The next tryout will be held in Norwalk, CA on Sunday, May 9. The following weekend the Locos will have a tryout in their own backyard, as they host UFL hopefuls on Saturday, May 15 in Las Vegas on the campus of UNLV.

If the tryout in Arizona is any indication of the quantity and quality of talent that will be on hand for the May tryouts, the Locos might have a glutton of solid players to sift through and add to their championship roster. Head Coach, Jim Fassel was seemingly impressed at the turnout for April’s tryout, given his comments that day. Fassel was quoted by Michael Samtur of UFL News praising the Arizona audition, saying that, “A lot of them can play, they just need an opportunity.” “The most encouraging thing was players kept coming up to me and telling me it was the best tryout camp they have ever been to. These things are usually a cattle-call, but they felt like they all got a fair look,” said Fassel. Fans and Locos alike can only hope that the May tryouts are even better.

If you are interested in trying out for the Locos and are in need of more information you can email them at LocosTryout@ufl-football.com. If you are interested in the tryout on Saturday, May 15 in Las Vegas visit http://www.ufl-football.com/LasVegas/Tryouts/2010/05/15/Welcome.

Good luck to Coach Fassel and all of the Locos hopefuls. We all look forward to this year’s championship defense.

If You Missed Locos Fan Fest, You Missed A Lot!

Las Vegas is a championship city once again thanks to the Las Vegas Locos of the UFL. Last year, the Las Vegas Locos won the UFL championship in the league’s inaugural season.

The Locos took the opportunity to share their success with the city that supported them by hosting a free Locos Fan Fest at Sam Boyd Stadium on Sunday, April 11.

In spite of the wind, many fans turned out to thank the team for a successful season and spend some time with Head coach Jim Fassel and 20 players from the 2009 UFL champions. The crowd was enthusiastic and truly appreciative to spend time with the players and coaches.

Coach Fassel added to the excitement by speaking directly to the crowd and thanking them for having “belief in the team just like the team had belief in the league.” According to Fassel, “This was an awesome beginning to the UFL and really a lot of fun to have an event like this.” He also went on to praise the team by telling the crowd that he is, “so proud of these guys and we [the Locos] are really looking forward to next season,” especially since “the team is only going to get better!”

Locos Fan Fest gave fans a chance to meet the players, get their autographs, and participate in a mini combine that simulated many of the same drills that UFL players around the league go through in their very own tryouts.

Locos Fan Fest was an amazing activity and a great chance to get close to Las Vegas’ very own champions. I know that Las Vegas, me included, cannot wait for the next season and the next chance to get to know the team.
